China’s cyber watchdog punishes livestreaming sites for ‘low-taste’ content – ABC News

China’s cyber watchdog has penalised several of the country’s leading livestreaming and video platforms for spreading “low-taste” content, reprimanding women for wearing low-cut clothes and men for indecent dancing and using foul language.

In a notice posted on Tuesday (local time), the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) said there was an “unhealthy phenomenon” prevalent among the 31 major livestreaming sites in the country.

The CAC said 10 firms, including video platforms similar to YouTube and TikTok with hundreds of millions of users, would be asked to freeze main channel updates, stop new user registrations, and revamp their platforms before a deadline.

It said the apps included Bilibili, Tencent-backed Huya, Douyu, Bytedance’s ixigua and Baidu’s quanminxiaoshipin.

The CAC also called on them to punish platform supervisors and to blacklist “delinquent livestreamers”, depending on the seriousness of the violations.

It also said some platforms were using online learning to promote video games, and were fail[ing] to censor “illegal information” on their comments sections.

A growing number of people are cashing in on the booming livestreaming industry in China in recent years.

According to statistics from the China Internet Network Information Centre, there were 425 million live stream users back in July 2018, which include sports broadcasting, hosting live shows, game streaming, and live concert streaming.

The Government heavily regulates its cyberspace and often scrubs content like violence, pornography, or politically sensitive speeches or commentary from social media.

Earlier this month, CAC took issue with Sina Weibo, China’s largest microblogging platform, over a separate matter and ordered it to disable some features for a week.

The action came after some Sina Weibo users complained their posts were being censored, after the relationship between a senior executive in the Alibaba Group and a prominent social media influencer came under scrutiny.
