Gaming operators in suspense on resumption – POST-COURIER

BY MELISHA YAFOI

Gaming operators and gamblers in the country are in suspense as to when the industry will be open for business.
The gaming operators and bookmakers were asked to close for the period of the state-of-emergency, which lapses today, however, they have not been advised if they can open for business.
More than five operators, when approached by this newspaper, have stated that they are yet to hear from the regulator as to when they can officially open for business.
These operators, including bookmakers, have closed their doors for more than two months, with nil operations and have employees who are affected by the closure.
Two gaming operators confirmed yesterday that they are yet to hear from the National Gaming Control Board (NGCB) as from their last email correspondence, they were advised to wait on the SoE to be officially over before they received an update.
One operator said maybe the regulator didn’t want to “jump the gun in case this SOE is extended” or some new protocols will be issued which may continue to affect the gaming industry.
Meanwhile, NGCB, in one of its impact reports released last month, cited chief executive officer Imelda Agon as saying that during the first two weeks of lockdown, from March 23 to April 8, the National Government, through the board, has lost over K7.5 million in revenue collection and will, therefore, continue to lose K60 million or more from April 2020 to June 2020 due to the SoE imposed.
Mrs Agon said while it is understood that the industry is considered as non-essential, NGCB’s board believes that the State’s financial constraint can be assisted by the gaming board’s contribution.
“The revenue generated for the last eight years has increased to more than K300 million annually, of which 55 per cent of the total revenue is remitted to the National Government’s main purse through IRC tax, 25 per cent to the gaming sites, 8 per cent to the gaming operators, 7 per cent to community benefit fund and 5 per cent is remitted to NGCB for its operation,” she said.
Attempts to get comments from Mrs Agon’s office yesterday were unsuccessful.

AI-optimized manufacturing Paper and pencil tracking, luck, significant global travel and opaque supply chains are part of today’s status quo, resulting in large amounts of wasted energy, materials and time. Accelerated in part by the long-term shutdown of international and regional travel by COVID-19, companies that design and build products will rapidly adopt cloud-based technologies to aggregate, intelligently transform, and contextually present product and process data from manufacturing lines throughout their supply chains.
