Piers Morgan criticises Matt Hancock after he calls Marcus Rashford by wrong name in interview – Mirror Online

Piers Morgan criticised Health Secretary Matt Hancock after he called Marcus Rashford “Daniel” in an interview today.

The Health Secretary had been appearing on Sky News when he referred to “Daniel Rashford” rather than Marcus.

The government’s boycott of Good Morning Britain reached 50 days today so Piers and Susanna Reid referred to other interviews Matt Hancock had done today.

“He just thanked a footballer for driving a government u-turn on 1.3million kids,” Piers said. “Do you know what he called him? He called him Daniel Rashford.

“It’s amazing, the Health Secretary bangs on [saying], ‘Footballers you’ve got to do your bit’. Then when one steps up he can’t even remember his name.”

Matt Hancock has since apologised for the blunder.

Earlier, GMB aired a number of clips from the MP’s damning interview from March – one of which showing the Health Secretary confirming that he had received ‘a lot’ of advice to stop flights from China… but chose not to listen.

He was also seen saying that he had chosen to continue shaking hands.

“No wonder Matt Hancock doesn’t want to talk to us,” Piers quipped.

The Health Secretary refused to appear on the programme today but was on the show back in March

Opening the show today, Piers began by mocking Boris Johnson by mimicking his voice, saying: “We all ridiculed Boris Johnson because ‘Oh I shook everyone’s hands in the pandemic.'”

He then went on to speak about Matt Hancock, who Piers said they were going to “re-interview” today because he was refusing to go onto the programme.

“On the March 3rd he did address whether he was shaking hands,” Piers said. “The Health Secretary, in the middle of the pandemic – here’s what he said.”

Piers pointed out a number of things Matt Hancock said back in March

Piers was then seen asking Matt Hancock whether people should be shaking hands, and he replied: “I’ve taken the medical advice on that and the medical advice is that the impact of shaking hands is actually very small.

“What actually matters is that you wash your hands regularly, much more regularly than you normally would.”

Piers said afterwards: “A week later they changed their minds, like everything from testing… the quarantine and checking airports.”

Matt Hancock appeared on the programme months agao

Susanna Reid then pointed out that they had also asked the Health Secretary about travelling and mass gatherings.

“We’ve been very clear in following the science,” Matt Hancock had responded. “There are things that people say to me that we should do that the scientists say will not be effective.

“One of them is stopping the flights – advice I had from lots of people was ‘stop the flights from China’. There was only one European country that stopped the flights from China and that was Italy and they became the epicentre of the European outbreak.”

He also said: “Unless there is advice that a specific gathering is going to be high risk it should not be stopped because it causes huge disruption but it doesn’t have a scientific or epidemiological benefit in terms of slowing the virus.”

Reflecting on the clips, Piers said: “So keep washing your hands, keep having mass gatherings, keep flying around the world and don’t worry about coming back, there’s no problem.

“No wonder Matt Hancock doesn’t want to come on on this glorious 50th anniversary.”
