Today is a very big day for gamers and the video game industry. Sony is showing off the “future of gaming” with up to two hours of video game reveals for the PlayStation 5.
The event is being touted by industry insiders as something you don’t want to miss—a truly gobsmacking deep dive into what Sony and its partners have to offer for the next generation of video games.
The only other event like this for next-gen so far was Microsoft’s swing-and-a-miss third party game showcase. That failed to land, unfortunately, though Microsoft will get a second chance to blow minds in July when they show off what their studios are working on.
Probably the best glimpse at next-gen was Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5 demo, but while that was running in-engine on a PS5, it’s not a “real” game. Just a very pretty tech demo.
Today we’ll finally get to see what Sony has up its sleeves for the PlayStation 5 and I couldn’t be more excited. You can watch the livestream below, starting at 1 pm PT / 4 pm ET. Read on below for my predictions and guesses as to what we’ll see this afternoon.
What To Expect
It’s impossible to say for sure what Sony will show off, but here are some likely contenders:
- Call Of Duty 2020 (likely Call Of Duty: Black Ops) — Sony still has a marketing and exclusivity deal with Activision for Call of Duty so it’s very, very likely that this year’s game (from Treyarch and other studios) will be revealed today. It’s the first next-gen Call Of Duty and it’s already much later in the year than usual for this series to announce an upcoming title. Likely set in Vietnam.
- Elden Ring — Is this wishful thinking on my part? I’m not sure. What I do know is that it’s been a year since FromSoftware showed off its next game—a Souls-like based on Norse mythology that has Game Of Thrones author George R.R. Martin on board as a writer. It’s been a year. It’s time to see how this thing looks in action.
- Bloodborne Remastered — It’s possible that we’ll see one of two older FromSoftware games remastered for the PS5 in today’s stream. My money is on Bloodborne (the best PS4 exclusive ever made) but other suggest it could be the PS3 game that started it all, Demon’s Souls. Either would make me happy. Both would make me joyous.
- Resident Evil 8 — The Resident Evil series has had a (mostly) great few years with the excellent Resident Evil 7 and the Resident Evil 2 Remake. It’s high-time to see the next game in the series, which will likely be another first-person horror game like 7.
- Horizon Zero Dawn 2 — A few years ago I made a video on YouTube called Horizon Zero Dawn Is Beautiful And Boring and I still get a comment on that damn video almost every day, either from someone agreeing or disagreeing with my take. It’s kind of funny. But that’s my take. Horizon Zero Dawn was a tedious affair set in a super cool world. My hope is that a sequel will make the gameplay less tedious and focus more on the story and action. I have faith we’ll see that sequel in today’s stream.
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 — The first game in this series was such a huge success that Sony bought the developer, Insomniac, in order to ensure a sequel. It’s been long enough now that we may indeed see that sequel in action in today’s presentation. I hope so.
- Killzone X — We almost always get a new Killzone game with the launch of a new PlayStation console and I see no reason why that should change now (Guerilla Games also makes the Horizon Zero Dawn games but they’ve had plenty of time to make another Killzone I suspect).
- God Of War 2 — I’d be surprised if we didn’t see the next God Of War, the sequel to the rebooted God Of War that came out way back in 2018. That was an excellent game (and it’s on sale right now as part of the Days Of Play sale FYI). It deserves an excellent sequel.
Okay that’s enough predictions. I hesitate to list more because who knows what we’ll see? Hopefully lots of new games in new franchises taking us to new worlds and giving us new experiences. Maybe even something for PS VR. Probably lots more from Japanese developers than what I’ve listed here. Maybe some games we already know a lot about like The Last Of Us Part 2, Ghost of Tsushima and so forth. Maybe some news about how games you purchase on PS4 will upgrade to PS5.
Then there’s Gran Turismo, stuff from Ubisoft (other than Assassin’s Creed Valhalla which was shown during the Microsoft event) and so on and so forth. The list could go on and on.
So what shouldn’t we expect? Well I’m dubious that they’ll show off the physical box itself. It’s possible, but I’m not counting on it. This seems software-focused and I think Sony will want to save the unboxing for another time.
I also doubt we’ll learn the price-tag. Sony and Microsoft are playing a game of chicken in this regard, holding out for as long as possible before naming a price. It definitely feels too soon for Sony to make that announcement. And why take away focus from the games?
All I know is that if this presentation runs for two hours and doesn’t mess around with too many long speeches and distractions, we’re in for a bunch of video game goodness this afternoon.
What do you hope to see? Let me know on Twitter or Facebook.
